Junior Tennis Rackets: Some Guidelines For A Correct Choice.

Sport and Art come together: Wilson & Romero Britto Collection

In this post, I would like to address a fascinating and specific topic that represents the critical element of the game of tennis and is much discussed: the tennis racket. Theories of various kinds related to the most diverse characteristics are spent daily on this tool. The racket, together with the ball, is, for us tennis lovers, the icon of this fantastic sport. The choice of this tool is an element of fundamental importance regardless of the level of those who practice this sport and, therefore, whether we are dealing with a beginner or a professional. Starting from the principle that each racket is different from the other, it should be noted that there is no right racket but one with which we are comfortable, with which we have the right feeling and the right sensations. Here the choice is a crucial moment, extremely delicate and therefore very subjective. In this post, in continuity with the previous one, I will provide some tips related to the choice of the racket for our little champions, the children.

If we have an aspiring tennis player in the family, the first thing to clarify is to understand if the practice will be occasional or regular and intensive. In the first case, we will need handling and resistance to involuntary impact; in the second case, in addition to handling, we will need more power and tolerance.

Too often, the choice of the junior tool is dictated by chance, which is a mistake because the junior racket is not a tiny racket but a small racket to create a great player. The world of rackets is lovely because, like tennis, it is very subjective and full of personal and subjective "fixations," which are part of our sport.

Here are some essential elements that can be a reference point in the choice and to be taken into account in an unexplored universe, such as junior tools.

Weight

The first element to consider when you want to buy any sports equipment for children is weight. Children cannot use the same tools as adults, and this also applies to the tennis racket, which must be lighter because the child must be able to move with ease and tranquility and, above all, must do it without excessive effort.

Handle

In a tennis racket, the handle is fundamental because the right size allows improved handling and gives better fluidity in athletic gestures. As for children’s tennis racket handles, generally, the size is L0 or, at most, L1.

Strings

Strings are another essential element to focus attention on and not to be underestimated. The ropes are given the arduous task of absorbing the "blow" of the ball, thus avoiding a dynamic shock that could impact the muscles of young people.

Frame

The last crucial element in choosing a children’s tennis racket is the frame, whose length becomes fundamental to allow the aspiring tennis player to move comfortably and hit the ball with agility and without excessive effort. Generally, very small children, from 3 to 6 years old, have rackets with a frame that measures about 43 cm. From six years old, on the other hand, the size gap with those adults is shortened.

The Stringing Of The Tennis Racket

These are, therefore, the main factors that affect the choice of the racquet suitable for your child. In addition to those listed above, there may be exceptions. In particular, the more or less massive build of the child, its weight, and its strength may also be relevant in the choice. Despite having the same height, two children of the same age may need two different types of rackets.
